What is the difference between a Factual and an Interpretive question?

Factual Question:
A factual question is a question with only 1 correct answer. However it can go into detail about the answer.

Example: Where can you see a meteor?

Interpretive Question:
An interpretive question is a question with more then 1 correct answer. Ranging from peoples viewpoints to how or why certain things happen.

Example: What did ancient people believe meteors were?

Did your chosen belbin type match your classmates perception of you? Why, Why not?

For my belbin role, I thought that I was a Team Worker because of the things I do whilst working in a team. The people I talked to agreed with what I had thought I was and gave their opinion as to why they thought I was a Team Worker. Some of my classmates also thought that I was more of a Plant. They said I was creative when it comes to what we should do and making stuff. But I don't know if i'm being creative of not. So when i'm working its not something I notice.

Look at the Learning Intention - Rewrite it in your own words

Original LI: To plan and undertake an enquiry into the causes, impacts and management of natural hazards.

LI: To organize and research in depth about the causes, impacts and the control of natural hazards or natural disasters. Posing and defining problems and asking relevant questions to aid your work.

Whats questions did you identify for you title page?

Questions about the "Restless Earth"

1. What is the most common natural disaster?
2. What is the worse natural disaster?
3. Why does the earth keep changing?
4. Besides volcanoes, how else does the "Restless Earth" change?
5. Why are some natural disaster frequent in certain areas?

Movie: What does this tell you about our "Restless Planet". Why do you think it is called a "Restless Earth?"

1. It shows that our planet is constantly changing and has been changing for billions of years. Creating and destroying land, forming oceans and water. Setting the foundations for life and plants. From what started out as just a few big rocks floating in space has become a marvel with many sights to behold.

2. I think it is called that because of the way it has continuously changed its environment. And how it is very violent at doing so. Moving and shaping itself with natural disasters.

2. Reflect on entire project

Learning & Thinking Skills

  • What was the key question of this topic?
What are Human Rights?
  • In one paragraph write an answer to the question, thinking about what you have learned.
During the extent of this topic i have learned lots of new things. This ranged from discussing Human Rights in class where we had to define the meaning of certain rights followed by ordering them by their importance, to listening to the real stories that real refugees have gone through. Hearing the sadness in their voice makes it hard to sit and listen to. But it was an inspiring event because those people have gone through difficult times and they still didn't give up. I learned a lot through my biography. Researching information about the things that go on inside the problem and what people are doing to stop it.
  • Why do you think this topic is important?
Because it shows how many people in this world don't have human rights or are unaware of them. Such as children who are forced to do hazardous tasks that harm or scar them. They are treated as tools rather then people and do a lot of work for little pay. Most of children who do that don't get to go to school and suffer large educational loses (E.g. Not being able to spell or read).
  • Which learning opportunities did I most enjoy doing?  Why?
I enjoyed doing the biography the most even though it was the most difficult learning opportunity. This is because I got to make a story of a child who is taken by the LRA and forced to fight. Using my imagination to decide what will happen to him and applying even more creativity to draw the sketches that I did for my group and myself. I did have times where I was stumped and didn't know what to write (Sometimes I wouldn't know what to write for 1 day) but I had help from my group members who discussed what they were doing and where they were stuck at too. Making the work challenging but still enjoyable for me.
  • Which learning opportunities did I least enjoy doing?  Why?
I didn't really enjoy the beginning of the topic because I was just learning about Human Rights  and it was hard to order them into a list of importance because in my opinion, all human rights are important. Just some of them are needed a bit more then others. And when we had to make a poster it was hard because it was hard to generalize Freedom. And we didn't get a lot done.
  • What skills have I used? Include 3 examples of work that show these skills.
  1. I included imagination in my sketches and for planning my biography.
  2. I used my Enquiry skills to plan and research information for my History of Human Rights and for my research sheet.
  3. I used my Information Processing skills to locate and collect useful information in which I used in most of my work such as my History of Human Rights presentation.
  • How can the learning in this topic help me in the ‘real world’?
It has changed my view of freedom and how children are treated in parts of this world. It also has shown me that there are many ways to help other people who are in trouble. Every little piece matters to them, no matter how small. And by having even the simplest human right, people are classed as more important then those who are poor and sometimes don't have the same rights we do.
  • What key idea do you think people should be aware of about this topic?
That there were many historical events throughout history that changed the course of Human Rights to shape the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that we have today. Also that there is a large number of people that don't have their human rights due to their status or because of what has happened to them. (E.g. Refugees, Child workers)
Level of knowledge & understanding - :D
Progress - :)
Enjoyment - :)

What targets could I set to help make progress in my learning?
Try to link them to your humanities learning and the key skills you want to develop.  E.g. Try to use key terms in my answers, try to ask my own questions.

1. I could ask more questions that benefit my understanding about what i'm learning about. not spending minutes thinking about a question and ending up not asking it. Instead once I know what to say, I say it.
2. I could try doing a larger amount of work for each topic. Diving deeper into information and going beyond whats written. Being more specific when categorizing and when I planning what i'm going to need or do before i write or do a piece of work.

3. When working as a group, i should try being more open with my ideas and helping the team with their ideas. Even if they are people i don't normally talk to outside of class.

Biography Reflection

1. Using your Success Criteria reflect upon if you have met the groups and individual goals.

I think that I have achieved I achieved my personal S.C which was to draw sketches for my story and my teammates stories. I only have to take photos of them so I can send it to my friends. Which i will do when i get back. However i don't think that I completed my second S.C because I don't think I included my other team members. So I forgot to do that part in my diary.

When I went through the group S.Cs I think that i did most of them. I managed to do describe realistic events, to use our thinking skills to help with our research & writing, to work co-operatively as a group and to be able to research independently and come out with a set of organized notes, to put inside our final biography. I also used PEEL with some of my work, either it being the work sheet or the biography.

How can a Peer Review of Work be Helpful?

It is helpful because it allows other peers to read your work and give their opinions about it. This can sometimes be constructive criticism or positive comments. They could be finding places where things didn't make sense, analyzing the story and giving advice from improvement.

The Things I Will Include In Akiki's Diary
I've chosen to record my work by writing a diary of Akiki's life. And I will have its in the stages i have shown below

Part 1: Life at home
This will be an overview of a normal day for him. Showing his school and friends. Talking about the conversations and interactions with other people. I've chosen to do this because i want to give the atmosphere a happy feel to it. Making everything seem perfect and just the way he likes it.

Part 2: The Hiding
This is where i'm going to have him write down what is happening to his town and what he is doing to avoid his captors. The way he got to where he is now and the people he saw on the way there. About what he has heard and describing the how scared he is. Contemplating about whether he will live or die

Part 3: Found you!
'Found you!' will be about how he was found and captured. Finding out that his captors are the LRA (Lords Resistance Army). Describing how cruel and malicious they to him and how they forced him and the other people to join them. With the execution of many of his friends leading to the reason he agreed.

Part 4: Charge
In this part I will explain the confrontation with the opposing army. Seeing children dying and soldiers just leaving them there. Regardless of if they are fatally wounded. Complaining about the injuries he has sustained and what he was doing at the time. This will also be the point where he is thinking of trying to escape.

Part 5: Waiting for the bullet
The final part of my Akiki's diary will have him talk about what he did to escape. Explaining all the others that helped him avoid detection. However they fail and get caught just outside the camp. during the escape he gets shot in the leg and is unable to continue. Watching as his friends ran into the distance and passing out. He will wake up in a room and is then noticed and told what is going to happen to him. Finally writing the last few lines of his story explaining that he hopes the others got away and other things.

Discuss Your Impressions of Yesterday's Refugee Assembly

I thought that yesterday's assembly was very saddening. I think that having to hear the stories of their life first hand makes it more powerful then any written work. Allowing them to explain their story in their own way and hearing the emotion in their voice makes it really depressing. However it is at the same time inspiring. To hear that the hope didn't break during the course of years. Leaving loved ones, not knowing if they would ever see them again. And having to leave the place they called home just to escape their fears. It was also inspiring to see the works of people. Constructing schools and other facilities because refugees aren't allowed to go to school without the right permits.

When You Choose Your Issue Blog: What is the issue? Why have you chosen it? Add pics/links

We chose Child Soldiers as the issue we thought was the most interesting. With many children being forced to join the Myanmar government to fight the opposing army. Being stolen from their parents and placed into the front lines with guns in which they can barely handle. Treated like pests or rats, given little food to eat and water to drink.

We found this interesting to us because we wanted to know why would the government and the communists be so desperate to use children as a resource. And with strict rules and painful punishments some of the deaths weren't caused by a gun.

(A Child Soldier holding an AK-47 Assault Rifle)
To complete our assignment we decided to write diary entries about our lives in different armies. Describing how we get captured and if we die or escape. Im will be writing from the perspective of a child in the LRA (Lords Resistance Army). I plan to at least describe some of the realistic events that happen inside the camps. And to tell a good story by making it sound like a kid who is actually getting punished or fighting on the front lines.

I also think that we might describe each other in our stories. If we see each other or help them. Talking about what happens to them to show that we are connected in our problems and situations.

What Is/Are The Issue/s That You Think You Would Like To Focus on? Why?

The issues I would like to focus on will have this sense of imprisonment to them. Choosing topics that would make people do something they don't want to or capturing and torturing. The subject I would like to work on the most would be Child Soldier. Forcing kids to kill or attack people just because they need more troops. Living under harsh rules with deadly consciences, having to kill friends because of moving when they weren't told to and other small things that could get you beaten to death.

My second choice would be Human Trafficking because it is a major problem in LEDC (Less Economically Developed Countries) with less income and higher child birth. People/children getting sold for money or to pay off debts. Forced to work for long periods of time usually doing hard or dangerous work for little pay.

Share 3 Things You Learned From Monday's Presentations

During mondays presentation I learned that Nelson Mandela was in prison for 27 years before being released. I learned that there are 54 articles in the Convention of the Rights of the Child which state specific rights the child has all the way up to 18 years old, where they become independent. Finally i learned that the editor and chief of WikiLeaks (Julian Assange) Started hacking when he was 16 years old.

Share 3 Things That You Learned From Thursday's Presentations

I learned that before the UN (United Nations) existed, there was the League of Nations which was formed by president Woodrow Wilson. I also learned that Gandhi performed a 24 day march to produce salt, even though there was a law that they couldn't produce salt, they had to buy it and pay taxes. And finally i learned that the name 'United Nations' was created Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Is Your Presentation Completed? Explain

I think that our presentation is 'Almost' finished because of some things i need to edit in. And to  make sure they link more into our topic. I am also going to do a check to make sure that there aren't any parts where it is too fast or too slow. So that the information is informative as well as it understandable. But overall i think that our presentation is done because we have got the information, we have written the bibliography at the end and included pictures to show what was happening.

Why Is A Bibliography Important?

A Bibliography is important because it shows the process of how you got the information. From where you got the information to how you added and changed the original text. This also shows how you have interpreted the information and wether or not you just copied and pasted it. This is  helpful towards the teacher too because it shows how creative the pupil is when having to do a presentation.

Describe How You Organized Your Research Process: Sources, Notes from sources, Focus Question

First of we decided on how we should present our work. I worked with Aqmar so we had to chose the form of presentation that we both were comfortable with. We concluded with choosing IMovie as our choice. I then am going to find information that answers our focus question "How Does This Issue Connect to Human Rights?" I gave the answer a criteria in that it had to be both informative as it is interesting. Getting to the point quickly and not write loads of sentences. As for pictures, I am going to find some pictures to go behind the words and what we say so that its not just a blank background.

Which Historical Aspect/s of Human Rights Are You interested In Focusing On?

I chose 2 topics that i would like to do, with WWII being the 1 I want to focus most on. I chose this because that was the time Human Rights was almost completely forgotten. And it shows how 1 man can voice his opinion and persuade people to join him and kill millions of people. Secondly i chose Mahatma Gandhi because of the way he protested against colonization and how he persuade people to create and join the Gandhi-Irwin Pack.

How do You think we should tackle Learning about the History of Human Rights?

I think we should tackle Human Rights by starting to focus on the how Human Rights have impacted our history. Wether it being slavery and torture, to when the rules where writen. This may be useful because some topics may branch of into smaller problems that may have not been talked about through most people.

Are You Happy With Our Rankings? Explain Why or Why Not

I think that the order we chose is good because, not only does it show what we as a class have voted on. But its lists in order what should be at the top, to what we least need. So in all, i think that the way we ordered it was great because its what i would've ordered from 1 to 6.

Describe How You Felt Working In Our Circle Yesterday

I felt awkward speaking in front of the class yesterday because i didn't know which direction to talk towards, unless i was arguing or adding on to what the other person said. But i still thought that the circle was a great idea to get people talking and sharing ideas. Especially when we used the bear to show that if you don't have the bear, you can't talk and had to wait till the bear was given to you.

Why Do You Think We Could Not Agree On The Ranking Of HR Yesterday?

I think that nobody could agree on a ranking yesterday because everybody has a different perspective of what they chose. Some might see the basics human rights essential for a good life, but some may think that something like 'The right to speech' is unimportant because they think actions are louder then words. So i think that everyones different opinions lead to our discussion not being able to agree on a ranking.

Describe The Ranking & Why You Chose This Order

                      Top 3

1. No discrimination
2. Right to live
3. Equal pay for men and women
4. Both genders
5. Freedom of religion
6. Freedom of speech
6. Freedom Speech
7. No torture/unusual punishment
8. Right for health care
9. Protection
10. Privacy
11. Security.
12. Right to shelter
13. Right to freedom
14. Right for education

I chose this order because i think that Discrimination is a very powerful topic. It shows how people react to one another. They either judge people by their color or by where they have come from. This can lead to wars and arguments. Secondly, i think that the Right To Live important as well. However it depends how you define 'Live'. It could mean dead or alive, or to be so restricted from another person that you don't have the choice to say what you want.
Last of all, i think that Equal Pay for Men & Women is important because if a man gets paid less then a woman just because she is liked by the boss. It isn't towards the man.

How Does The Story Freedom River Connect to Human Rights?

I think it connects to Human Rights by showing what people did to try to tell the others what they were doing to the river, and people were so blinded by their arrogance that they ignored him and attacked him. Or that the people that lived on the river wouldn't let any outsiders in, by blocking all the entry points. And also how it showed that all those people would do anything to purify the river that they lived on.

What Do You Think Is The Most Important Human Right?

When it comes to the most important human right, I think that discrimination is very important. No person should be better then another just because they are from different places or ages. We (as humans) are all the same. There are people like the UN who are working against discrimination worldwide. Slavery, Racism and Gender Inequality is just a small part of discrimination in the world, but not a small thing to stop.

Empathy

a) How do you think the boy in the cartoon feels? What emotions? Why?
- I think that he feels angry because he doesn't get to do what he wants, and forced to make footballs for very (or little) pay. However he might be feeling sad about not getting to use the footballs when he has made them.

b) What hopes and dreams do you think he has?
- He might be wanting to play football instead of making them. Also to play with his friends and have a good time.

c) What could we do to help?
- We could...

Diary Entry 4:

*  I woke up this morning to the sound of someone shouting that we have hit something. Soon after, a group of people came and stole us of our shelves. They carried us up to the higher level and planted us there. I hated it when the shoved us around like they didn’t care. But my anger grew bit by bit as they then tied us together with chains across our necks and hands. Then finally marched us off the ship and finally back onto land. By now the heat was unbearable; Its been so long since I was stolen from my family and forced into the ship that I’ve forgotten what it feels like to be outside.
*  They dragged us to where there were tall places made of rock. It look so square compared to the huts we had back in the village but they were so much bigger. But the sights didn’t last long, as we were once again thrown into a cage and forced to be watched by other white men. Staring at us like how we would stare at the animals we would kill.
*  By the time the sun was high in the sky, they took us out of our cells and showered us in some weird water. It felt nice though, since we haven’t had anything to cool ourselves with since we left the ship. They wouldn’t let us leave the group or take one step away from the group. This kid did and he got shoved back. I almost leaped at the man for doing that to a small little kid. By knew by the way he acted, that he wasn’t messing around.
*  It wasn’t long after we were put back into those cages, that we were taken one by one to a place in front of the white people. The would come up to the stage and would feel and check us. Then the would put their hands up and the last person that would put his hand up seemed to get one of us. I really didn’t get what they were doing. One man shouting strange words while others responded hastily.
*  But whether I wanted it or not. It soon became my time to stand up in front of them. One man came up and went through my hair. I tried to force him away, but another had my chains in his hands and pulled me back. Then they started raising their hands and I knew it wasn’t long till I was going to be taken.

Monday, 13 June 2011

Diary Entry 3:

*It has been a long time since I have been let out of this storage. It is very hot in the lower levels of the ship. But the moaning isn’t as bad as when we were first captured. A visitor doesn’t come often except when its lunch or dinner. But the food is terrible. No taste, No color, And to make it worse. It was always the same. The smell of the storage seems to be getting worse to. The scent of salt water is always lingering inside of me now. Stamped into my memory.
*  I could tell the captain when I saw him. There was a thing about his clothes that would stick out compared to the others. But the most obvious would be that the others would listen and do what he commands. Except one person who was always by his side. Though not saying a lot, he still had power over the others.
*  But for a captain I think he should at least have some good food. Or give us some time outside; because I dont know how long the other people will last but I’m not going so well myself. The air is unclean and makes my head hurt. The constant sound of the waves hitting the ship and the rocking motion would be enough to annoy anyone
*  The rusty shelves and small spaces have already taken some to the limit. In the morning I sometimes see motionless bodies being carried away, and I haven’t seen them since. And I hate being forced to do stuff I dont want to. And when it comes to a situation like this, I Absolutely Hate It. Nothings worse then being taken away from your family and cramped into some boat across the ocean.
*I’ve been able to talk to some people that are cramped next to me. Shackled like me, but somewhat more optimistic. One of them is from the village close to ours and he was younger then I was. But I admired his optimism which seem to make me feel better.
*  I have heard that we are getting closer to where we are suppose to stop. I hope we get there soon. Life in storage is horrible. I have had it with the smell, sights and the space. I want to leave!

Diary Entry 2:

*  I dont believe what is happening. These strange “people” have just came attacked me. I was collecting the water like normal; except I was late so I missed the group. So I had to go by myself. And as I was walking back when they came and tried to attack me and they put a net over me. But I dont know why they would want to take me. Wouldn’t they want to take some stronger and bigger then me? Or were they going to take someone weaker first? I can feel them tug and push me in this bag. It hurts especially whenever they hit me. But I haven’t done anything wrong!
*  After a while I began to smell salt water and I knew that I was getting closer to the sea. And by that time I didn’t bother calling or shouting for help because I knew that I was to far for anyone who knew me to hear me. I heard shouting and seagulls when I was escorted up some kind of stairs and then finally let out of that horrible sack.
*  I saw other people that looked like my people but the feeling of not being completely alone was enough to make me not care about what was going on. I soon found myself guided down another set of stairs; but they were a lot easier to go down then the first.
*  I also heard a discussion between two people as I was brought down to a lower part of this huge boat. I can remember that he said “The next stop will be longer then the first”. Then I was directed another direction and found myself passing other people that were locked up in chains positioned in small shelves. But it hurts to think that all these people have been taken too. And I wonder how my parents are doing. I hope they will be ok and I hope that my brother and sister will be help them.
